Number 1: Master your camera settings if you want to improve your photography skills.

One of the most important things you can do to improve your photography skills is to master your camera settings.

I battled with my second camera that I nearly gave it up. Understanding how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO work together can help you achieve the right exposure and create the look and feel you want in your photos.

Tip to help you with this: Take the time to read your camera manual, experiment with different settings, and practice until you’re comfortable with your camera’s features.

Number 2: Use Natural Light

Natural light is one of the most beautiful and versatile sources of light for photography. I tried many top-notch lighting gadgets and I found out that, when you can, natural light is still the best.

Instead of relying on artificial lighting, try shooting during the golden hours—the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset—when the light is soft and warm.

Alternatively, experiment with different types of natural light, such as backlighting or side lighting, to create interesting and dynamic photos.

Number 3: Focus on composition.

Composition is the arrangement of visual elements in a photo. By paying attention to the composition, you will create photos that are visually pleasing and tell a story.

The rule of thumb is to have a simple but effective composition technique that involves dividing your photo into thirds both horizontally and vertically and placing your subject on one of the intersecting points.

Number 4: Shoot in RAW format.

Shooting in the RAW format gives you more control over the final look of your photos. RAW files contain all the data captured by your camera’s sensor, which means you can adjust the exposure, white balance, and other settings without losing quality.

While shooting in RAW does take up more space on your memory card, the flexibility it offers is well worth it.

Number 5: Practice, practice, practice

Like any skill, photography takes practice to master. Take your camera with you wherever you go and make a point to shoot every day.

Set yourself some challenges, experiment with new techniques, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. By practicing regularly, you’ll develop your style and become more confident in your abilities.

Number 6: Learn from Other Photographers

One of the best ways to improve your photography skills is to learn from others. Follow other photographers on social media, attend workshops and conferences, and seek out feedback on your work. You can also join online photography communities where you can share your work and learn from others.

Number 7: Experiment with different genres.

Don’t be afraid to try different genres of photography. Even if you specialize in a particular type of photography, exploring other genres can help you develop new skills and techniques that you can apply to your work. Whether it’s street photography, portrait photography, or landscape photography, there’s always something new to learn.

While it’s true that the best camera is the one you have with you, investing in quality equipment can make a big difference in the quality of your photos. Consider upgrading your camera body, lenses, and accessories as your budget allows. However, keep in mind that equipment is only a tool, and ultimately, it’s your skill and creativity that makes the difference.

Number 9: Create a portfolio.

My ninth tip to help you improve your photography skill is to Create a portfolio. Portfolios help you to showcase your best work and attract potential clients or collaborators.

To do this, you need to choose a selection of your strongest photos that demonstrate your style and technical ability and present them in a professional and visually appealing way.

You can create a physical portfolio or an online portfolio using a platform like Behance or Squarespace.

Have Fun!

At the end of the day, photography is a creative pursuit, and it should be enjoyable. Don’t get too bogged down in technical details or compare yourself to others.
