Writing is not child’s play because it comes with mental baggage. From outlining to writing, proofreading or editing, meeting deadlines, working with different clients, etcetera.
As a newbie, there are several factors you need to know before you put your hands on paper. These factors will help you know how to navigate and plan your content for approval or to match its purpose.
Before we go any further, let me tell you a little about myself:
Here are 8 important things you need to pay attention to before you start your writing career.
All right, let’s dive into it.
1. Your Articles Aren’t For Everyone.
First, you must know that your write-ups aren’t for everyone. It is essential to understand that every article you craft is talking to a certain set of people and that’s why you must understand your target audience before you start writing at all.
Who is your target audience? They are people who need that article. Your target audience is individuals, groups of people, or organizations who understand every word of your writing or document.
Identifying those who need your article would help you stay focused on writing. The way our brains are wired is vast which could accommodate different ideas at the same time which means when your target audience is unknown to you, you might write out of context.
Several ideas will pop up when writing which may impair your write-up, so you must know exactly what to write at a particular time.
However, your target audience also helps you to provide the best information to include in your document and this also would influence the tone and structure of your article.
What I mean is that the choice of your words when writing to a teenager would be different from that of an adult even if it’s the same topic.
How you communicate to them through your written content should differ entirely.
2. OUTLINING:
Outlining is an essential part of writing which is sometimes overlooked by newbie writers. According to Google, outlining is the writing process to organize our ideas, visualize our potential structure, and further flesh out and develop points.
Outlining is beneficial, there is a high chance you deviate if your points aren’t properly outlined–it keeps you focused on your words.
There are several phrases, clauses, and information that may or may not be necessary for your article. Moreover, it would filter unwanted information that is not needed in your documents.
Outlining also prevents writer’s block. A boss of mine once told me that she spends over two hours crafting her outlines because when you get your outlines right, combining words shouldn’t be a problem. After all, you have tackled the most difficult part of crafting your words.
3. READ:
“Show me an avid reader, and I will show you a great writer”.
Fisayomi Oluwasuyi.
As a newbie writer, one of the best ways to become a successful writer is by reading, researching, and following up with experts in your niche. The ability to read and understand would aid you to convey your thoughts effectively.
Read as many books as you can. This would help you to diversify and when you finally have a niche, you can channel your energy into it.
4. ONE STEP AT A TIME:
As a newbie writer, you shouldn’t be too hard on yourself. In as much as you are trying to put in your best in crafting a long content, remember you are just starting, you should start by reading books if you don’t know what to write about. You could write a review of the book. Becoming a badass writer isn’t a one-day thing; just put in your best every day without breaking out.
5. WRITER’S BLOCK COULD HAPPEN:
Writer’s block is the inability to continue with a piece of content. Writer’s block could happen at an article’s beginning, middle, or end. This could be due to some reasons. When this occurs, you should take a break. Distract yourself from the project. You can decide to engage in something like going for a walk, reading, or doing something different. Then you can go back to work. You shouldn’t panic about not being able to finish your project in one sitting.
6. CONSISTENCY:
Yeah! This is one of the hardest things to do. To get good at crafting great words, you have to write consistently. As a newbie, you should write daily.
According to Forbes, “It gets easier with practice, the more you write, the easier it becomes and the better you get”. It might not be easy to get into a new routine but with time, you will.
7. HAVE A CONTENT BANK:
Just like your normal bank where your money is kept. You should save your content. Money is saved in the bank for future purposes, the same goes for the content bank.
A content bank is a place where you write and keep all the content you’ll love to write about. One fact about the content bank is that it deters writer’s block.
Content is kept in the content bank for many reasons and some are:
- Lack of forgetfulness: There are times you might not feel like writing at one particular time or you get an idea when working on a particular project, you can document your thoughts in your content bank and develop it later on.
- To prevent writer’s block: With a content bank, you will always know what to write on.
- To be organized: You don’t have to wake up every morning racking your brain on what you would write because you have a bank you could always go to.
8. COPING WITH CRITICISM:
As a writer, it’s beneficial to learn how to cope with criticism and rejection. There are times that you would have spent hours, days, and weeks outlining and crafting out a beautiful piece, and yet it would still be rejected.
Your self-esteem and confidence shouldn’t be affected because your work is rejected. Let me shock you, your work might be rejected multiple times, and yet you still have to redeliver, I know that hurts right?
Here are some tips that can help.
Learn from your rejected works. You can check what you are doing wrong, and try to re-adjust for better performance.
Don’t take it too personally: Your journey to becoming a celebrity writer is important. There are a lot of organizations that you are still going to work with, and might still reject your work because your work gets criticized shouldn’t stop you from working on the project.
Lastly, learn to ask questions: Whenever your work is rejected, you should ask questions about how to improve and deliver an excellent project.
I wish you a wonderful ride in your writing process.
