Is School A scam?

Man suffering from unemployment.

Examining the Value and Validity of Traditional Education Systems.

In 2019, A song titled “school na scam” was sung by a popular musician In Nigeria. The song was played
both in Africa and even in international countries. The song raised a single question by a lot of individuals,
which was “Is school a scam”?

The musician made use of the song to express his concern about the rate
of unemployment in Nigeria.

CMIE reported that the rate of unemployment increased to eight to nine percent in August, as observed
to seven to eight percent in July 2019.

In 2021, the unemployment rate In Nigeria has risen to over 33.5 percent, and this rate has made some
people consider school as a scam.

Because of the forgoing, many Nigerians have resorted to different things to make money. A good number of young ones have embraced blogging, affiliate marketing, AdSense revenue, and so on.

Is school a scam?

In 2020, the question was raised by Morufu Olalekan Raim on the Internet when a set of Nigerian
students walked up to him to know if education in Nigeria was a scam.

The major answer that was gotten was that the reason for such a question was due to the high rate of
unemployment In Nigeria, just like I have written earlier.

Additionally, more than 50% are unemployed which has resulted in a series of protests in Nigeria.
The norm was that after graduating from university with a good grade, the next is to get a good job but
the reverse is the case which has made quite a few young individuals lose interest in going to school. The
saying goes “School Na Scam”.

It was claimed that World Billionaires like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg did not become rich with a BSC
certificate because they both dropped out of school.

Their story has been used as an excuse by most African youth, especially in Nigeria, however. This has caused some set of individuals to drop out of school to look for greener pastures through other ways of life.

The question is, do those who believed in the proposition become people of influence today? or
perhaps still looking for greener pastures or perhaps regret dropping out?

Is education a pathway to influence?

The reason a lot of graduates are swimming in the pool of unemployment is that our mindset has been
structured in a way that when we go to primary school, secondary school, and university, get a job, and boom! we are rich or preferably comfortable.

But then they’ve come to face the reality after searching for a good job for two or three years, then the saying goes on again ” School Na Scam”.

To be realistic, that should be a custom for every country for graduates, but the reverse is the case owing
to societal problems like corruption, political instability, overused and plunders of resources, inhumane,
etcetera. But then, If education was to be a scam in Nigeria, then why do people sit in power and authority in the area of health, agriculture, tourism, etc?

Why are there massive changes in the world?

A person who wants to be successful must pass through a place of education; “Declaim”: The word
‘education’ is not only limited to the triangular basics of school: primary education, high school
education, and higher education.

According to Nelson Mandela, education is the most powerful weapon which can be used to change the
world
.

This means to be educated or enlightened in this 21st century is not only by graduating and
getting a certificate.

The billionaire Bill Gates, which most youths use as an excuse to leave school, identified the knowledge of
his computer (Microsoft) when he was at school (College) and he didn’t stop learning.

Note: His idea was gotten and created while he was in school.

The world evolves daily in which education has gone beyond the physical world but also into the digital
space which has turned our phones, laptops, and other electronic gadgets into powerful assets and
weapons to change the world through learning digital skills.

Digital Skill according to UNESCO is the use of a digital device, communication applications, and networks
to access and manage information. Examples are

  • graphic design,
  • content creation,
  • web development, UI/
  • UX design,
  • digital marketing,
  • copywriting,
  • blogging, etc.

It is quite unfortunate that few students and graduates are familiar with the transformation of the world
regarding education.

However, an advantage to these skills is that they are high-paying skills that have created job opportunities for the few students and graduates who are well-informed about the space and skills.

Additionally, it has also given them an edge over students and graduates with a certificate. Presently, employers don’t only look for a graduate with a certificate but also people who can bring value
to the table.

These digital skills like Writing skills, web development, digital marketing, designs, etc, are used to promote the visibility of organizations, increase wealth and also generate more revenues. And this has helped a few people to keep their jobs.

Other Types of Education:

Other digital skills are Time Management, Personal Development, Leadership, Entrepreneurship,
Innovation, etc.

These are skills that are less taught in universities and which are expected of every
graduate to learn.

The world has gone through a tremendous change through education, especially in Nigeria. Education has given us freedom. It has opened the mind of a black man. Education has built the mind of people through self-esteem, self-dependence, and self-confidence.

Education has increased the curiosity and eagerness of people to learn new things. It has made it easy in
terms of researching, evaluating, and building mind development.

It has given us the right information about what we ought to know and debunk the barbaric ancient
myths, superstitions, and taboos that have plagued us for centuries.

Education has given me access to intriguing ideas, concepts, and values. The way humans interact, communicate and learn from one another has modernized through education.

Laws, obligations, and rights of the citizens have been shaped into a better society through education. According to Albert Einstein, “Education is what remains when one has forgotten what one has learned
in school”.

Life has gone beyond getting a degree and also inculcating social values. With education, a person can become anything in the world.

Conclusively, Is school a scam? It depends on the mindset, beliefs, and values a person has formulated
toward education.
